Thanks for sharing this powerful, personal writing.
I realize I'm just an internet guy, and you've almost certainly heard this before, so please forgive me if this is too forward or overly familiar, but have you considered edible cannabis?
If "sober" = no mind altering substances due to past dependency, then point decidedly taken. Sobriety all the way.
But if "sober" = no ethanol due to a hep. C diagnosis, cannabis has helped people in my life.
Several folks I know personally and professionally who have given up alcohol have far fewer contraindications with edible cannabis, while still enjoying the psychological, therapeutic benefits.
So, I have CBD pills, which just make me sleepy, but Ohio is still really behind the times. I don't have a medical marijuana card, and the closest dispensary is a long way from me anyway. I tried smoking pot one time, and it did not go well LOL But I would nibble on a gummy -- I'm unclear whether we're allowed to order them online and have them shipped... Must research.
"prop in the little movie in my mind" Right the dance of modern life.
I think Alex P's comment is well worth exploring. Unlike the massively big business known as pedalling depressants, which of course includes those umbrella drinks, mind altering agents afford different paths to explore, within reason

I can only quote the wisdom of Homer Simpson: "The answers to life's problems aren't at the bottom of a bottle. They're on TV!"
I really do need to watch more TV, as bizarre as that sounds.
Still one of your best pieces
Thank you. I'm at my best when I rant.
What a terrific piece.
Thanks - when in doubt, recycle for Substack LOL This platform is really getting me nowhere.
